Friday, 04 September 2009

Edinburgh produced a heroic defensive display and scored three breathtaking tries at the Cardiff City Stadium to win by a single point over the Blues. A late Gareth Thomas try led to a nerve shredding finale, but Edinburgh's defence held firm and for the first time since 2005 the Black and Red Army have won their opening Magners League match.

Chris Paterson scored a memorable try straight after the half-time break which followed up first half scores from Alan MacDonald and Tim Visser to clinch another marvellous win in Wales. To view highlights please click here.

For Paterson's try, Phil Godman's searching cross-field kick was expertly caught by Mark Robertson who off-loaded to the effervescent full-back who raced through the Blues defence to score under the posts.

Late in the first half, Cardiff's Chris Czekaj scored a try to reduce the deficit – even though he was clearly tackled into touch by Ben Cairns. Nevertheless, the officials allowed the try to stand. Edinburgh scored two breathtaking tries inside the opening 20 minutes at Cardiff City Stadium with blindside flanker MacDonald scoring first of all and Visser scoring on his Magners League debut.

In the build-up to Edinburgh's first try of the night, Robertson popped up the pass following some enterprising play involving John Houston and last season’s Player of the Year, MacDonald dotted down underneath the posts. Visser then scored in the corner after a fantastic attacking move which culminated with Godman providing the final pass.

Godman added the extras to the first try with Paterson also adding a conversion and Edinburgh attacked with real gusto; playing at tempo with bucket-loads of energy to dominate the early exchanges.

But despite dominating for large periods of the first half, Edinburgh were guilty of blowing a couple of chances. The Black and Red Army squandered a clear cut try-scoring chance when Houston burst through the middle and found Paterson, but his off-load was intercepted and the opportunity was lost.

Paterson unfortunately missed a couple of pots at goal - almost unheard of - and on the stroke of half-time, Godman's long range penalty attempt fell short of the posts.

Credit to Nick Scrivener's input, Edinburgh's blitz defence really stood up to a thorough examination from the Blues, who, even without their Lions contingent, fielded some established players.

Edinburgh, without the likes of Mike Blair, Ross Ford, Jim Hamilton and Simon Webster, showed the 36-man squad has genuine strength in depth with Greig Laidlaw doing really well under pressure.

Despite a couple of ill-judged mistakes, Godman was at the zenith of his playing powers and, both in defence and orchestrating the attack, was magnificent.

Alliater Hogg produced a whole-hearted performance and was hugely influential in determining the outcome with some timely tackles. Every member of the squad involved deserves enormous credit for their contributions in another epic triumph and hopefully the nation will stand up and take notice of a team that just keeps on winning. The victory in Cardiff was Edinburgh's seventh win in a row and it was truly magnificent.
