David Joseph Welsh Young joined Edinburgh from Gloucester in May 2009 after impressing then head coach Andy Robinson with his performance for Scotland 'A' against Ireland 'A' in Dublin. He, Geoff Cross and Jack Gilding will be involved in a three-way struggle for the tighthead responsibilities in season 2010/11.

Young, who was born in Glenrothes, made his Scotland A debut as the anchor of the scrum in the Barclays Churchill Cup win against Canada in Ottawa in June 2008. By the end of that tournament he was one of five forwards to have started in all three of the Scots’ games. He had a further start in the A international against Ireland at the RDS, Dublin, in February 2009.

David was briefly with Edinburgh Rugby on loan from Leicester Tigers in season 2006-2007, making his debut as a replacement in the Magners League victory against Connacht at Murrayfield. He played for Scotland at under-18 and under-19 levels while he was with Kirkcaldy. His international honours in the older group included the 2004 World Championship in Durban, South Africa, and, after joining Leicester Tigers, he made his under-21 international debut as a replacement in the match against France in Bourgoin in February 2005. Later in that championship campaign, he played as a substitute in Scotland’s first under-21 win against Ireland and the victory against Italy. The following year he was the ever-present tight head in Scotland’s 10 under-21 matches, scoring a try in the 24-21 win against Ireland at Athlone. David joined Leicester’s academy squad in 2004, and in December that year he won the academy’s player of the month award.

His Leicester debut followed as a replacement in the Powergen Cup match against Northampton in season 2005-2006, and his first start for Tigers also came against the Saints in the EDF Cup less than two months before he made the switch to Edinburgh. In summer 2008, following the Churchill Cup, he left Leicester to join Gloucester..

On his way up the ranks with Kirkcaldy David played for Caledonia Reds in four age grades (under-16, under-18, under-19, and under-20), and he has attended the Murray Mexted Rugby Academy in New Zealand.
