YOUNG ON NEW EDINBURGH START PDF Print
Monday, 29 June 2009

David Young admits he has thoroughly enjoyed his first fortnight as an Edinburgh player and believes the hard yards he is currently putting in at the club’s gym will stand him in good stead for his debut season in the Black and Red.

Despite learning his trade down south with Leicester Tigers and Gloucester, Glenrothes-born Young, who has already been capped at Scotland ‘A’ level, is no stranger to Edinburgh after enjoying a loan spell in the Capital at the beginning of 2007.

Now the 24-year-old is back and determined to follow in the footsteps of last season’s Newcomer of the Year, Kyle Traynor by making an impact in the front row.

Young is on board and you can join him by snapping up one of our great value Season Ticket packages. From just £30 (Juniors) you can watch 24 hours of top-class action at the home of Scottish Rugby. Call 0131 346 5180 or click here to become part of a record breaking team to be proud of.

Young said: “It has been good so far and I’ve settled in well. I’m quite familiar with Neill Potts (Edinburgh fitness head coach) from working with Scotland ‘A’ and from when I was on loan here a few years ago.

“So the boys have been working hard in the gym for the beginning of the season. Pre-season at any club is pretty challenging; it is the hardest part of the year.

“In terms of getting fit, some people have different priorities. Some people have to get big and strong while others need to lose weight, get quicker or more powerful.

“So it is pretty individual in terms of what you are trying to achieve. The front row have all been training together and are striving for the same goals.

“It is a competitive time of the year as well. We are looking to record good scores in the gym and pushing yourself at every opportunity.

“If you put the hard work in now then it pays off during the season.”

Last season, both Geoff Cross and Traynor worked hard and were rewarded with a sequence of starts which led to international honours.

Now Young wants to follow suit and make an impression up front for Edinburgh.

He added: “Those are examples of two young props who have worked really hard off the field on improving their skills and that has been recognised.

“They were given opportunities. Down in the Premiership, it is a hard slog being a young prop, so it is pretty encouraging seeing the likes of Geoff and Kyle, players who have put the hard graft in, doing well.

“That is an example of the culture at Edinburgh – giving young lads an opportunity and that is a great motivational factor.”
