FIVE PLAYERS DEPART EDINBURGH PDF Print
Friday, 26 June 2009

Wing Roland Reid, centre Calum MacRae (pictured), hooker Steve Lawrie, prop Bruce McNeil and wing Marc Teague have all parted company with Edinburgh.

Lawrie has joined English side, Doncaster Knights and says he will leave Edinburgh with a collection of fond memories from his time in the famous Black and Red.

Joining Edinburgh as an apprentice in 2005, Lawrie, 25, signed professional forms two years later and made his Heineken Cup debut against Leinster in January 2007.

He enjoyed success at Premier One level with Watsonians before joining Boroughmuir last season and overall clocked up 23 appearances for Edinburgh at first team level.

Now Lawrie will join up with former Edinburgh head coach Lyn Howells at Doncaster and he says he is aiming to put into practice everything he has learned at Edinburgh.

Lawrie said: “Edinburgh is my home club and it was a massive honour to be selected for the squad.

“To be involved in helping to move the club forward is something I’m really proud of. I enjoyed my time at Edinburgh; they are a cracking bunch of guys. There were never any egos in the team and everyone worked hard for each other.

“Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out for me playing-wise at Edinburgh, so now it is time to kick on use the knowledge that I’ve learned from Robbo (Andy Robinson), Moff (Rob Moffat) and Todd Blackadder.

“I think the whole end of the previous season was a really memorable time; beating the Ospreys down there and then beating the Scarlets was great. Then off the back of that I really enjoyed playing for Scotland at the Edinburgh 7s.

“I’ve just enjoyed working with the Edinburgh guys working day in, day out. Andy Robinson has brought my game on as well over the past couple of years.

“Rugby is all about taking opportunities and if I get one at Donaster then I will grab it with both hands.”

Scotland ‘A’ internationalist Calum MacRae has also left Edinburgh following two seasons in the Capital.

Formerly captain of the Borders, 29-year-old MacRae, who operated at inside centre and full-back during his time at Edinburgh, contributed six points from 14 appearances.

Unfortunately, the opening half of MacRae’s debut season in the Black and Red was wrecked by a severe ankle injury and he eventually made his debut in the Heineken Cup match at Leinster.

Then, after some productive pre-season showings against Wasps and Bath, MacRae started the opening two matches of the Magners League season against Munster and Leinster in midfield before suffering further injury problems.

Ex-Scotland internationalist Roland Reid has also left the club after spending two years with Edinburgh.

Originally signed as a back row forward, Reid made his first start for Edinburgh on the wing, but unfortunately his progress was stalled due to injury.

Overall, 30-year-old Reid, who won two caps for Scotland, made 16 appearances for Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, prop Bruce McNeil has decided to rejoin Hawick following his season-long stay at Edinburgh.

Called into the Scotland ‘A’ squad last season, McNeil made his only appearance off the bench during the Magners League match against the Scarlets in March.

McNeil said: “It was a good experience and I learned a lot from it.”

Wing Marc Teague, like McNeil a Scotland Club internationalist, has also decided to return to the Premier One scene with his beloved Heriot’s.

The 27-year-old struggled with injury during his year-long stay in the professional ranks, but made his Magners League debut at Scarlets in March.

Assistant coach Rob Moffat thanked the players for their contributions towards the Edinburgh cause and wished them well for the future.

Moffat said: “Stevie, Kitty (MacRae), Roly, Bruce and Teaguey have all been good professionals and a pleasure to work with.

“We wish them all the best as they move onto new challenges and thank them for helping Edinburgh set such high standards over the past couple of seasons.”
