WEBSTER ON WINNING STREAK PDF Print
Wednesday, 24 June 2009

Simon Webster admits he is aiming to carry his winning streak into the 2009/2010 season after enjoying a couple of hugely successful months in his career.

Immediately after helping Edinburgh record our highest ever finish in the Magners League (runner’s up behind Munster) with six wins in a row, the experienced wing then went one better with Scotland ‘A’ to win the IRB Nations Cup in Bucharest.

Webster (pictured with David Blair) says that he is determined to carry that winning habit through to the next campaign and revealed he is excited about Edinburgh’s Heineken Cup draw. Webster, who scored three tries during Edinburgh’s record-breaking run-in and two tries for Scotland ‘A’, said: “I was thinking about it the other day and winning nine professional games in a row is a record for me.

“I want to take that winning streak into next season and make it 10, 11 or 12. It has certainly been an enjoyable season.

“Finishing second in the Magners League was a great achievement for Edinburgh and winning the Nations Cup was a good feeling as well. Now we will take our time, recover and start focusing on next year.”

Edinburgh have been handed a tough Heineken Cup Pool draw with former winners, Ulster, Bath and double finalist Stade Francais placed alongside Scotland’s top team.

But Webster says he is confident Edinburgh can achieve something special; as long as they prepare properly and replicate their record-breaking performances.

He added: “The Heineken Cup has the best teams in Europe competing in it, so no matter which group we were going to be in, it was always going to be a tough draw.

“But we control our own destiny in the tournament; it is down to us. If we can play as well as we all know we can do then we can certainly beat anyone.”

The draw also sees former Edinburgh favourite Hugo Southwell line up against close friend Webster for the first time and the winger says he is looking forward to the clash.

He said: “Hugo was at Edinburgh for a long time and he did really well for us and I’m sure he’ll do well at Stade Francais.

“But when we pull on the Edinburgh shirt; we will be putting friendships to one side and it is all about winning that game.”

In the two previous seasons, both Toulouse and Leinster have won at Murrayfield before reaching the showpiece Final in May and Webster acknowledges Edinburgh must do well on their travels in order to progress through to the latter stages.

He said: “In the Heineken Cup, if you lose one game then suddenly you’re in trouble. We know from winning at Ravenhill and the Rec, albeit in a pre-season game, over the past two years what we need to do.

“The games seem so far away at the moment, but when we get back to pre-season we will start concentrating on tackling each game. We can’t get too far ahead of ourselves; we’ve got to take each game as it comes.”
