THOMPSON PROUD OF FAMILY FEAT PDF Print
Sunday, 14 June 2009

Jim Thompson celebrated a double feat during the Scotland 'A'’s opening match of the 2009 IRB Nations Cup; not only did he score two tries against Russia, but he also played alongside his cousin, former Edinburgh scrum half Rory Lawson for the first time.

The 24-year-old crossed the whitewash twice during the first half of the 49-7 win over the eastern European team and, in the second half, was joined on the pitch by scrum-half Lawson – much to his delight.

Thompson said: “It was fantastic to get an opportunity to play with Rory. It is a great honour to play for Scotland with a member of your family and hopefully we’ll able to do it again." “It was also good to score the tries. I didn’t really have to do an awful lot, but I was pleased to score.

“Overall it was quite a good team performance and that was the most important thing. Hopefully we can build on that against Uruguay because we know there is lots we need to work on.”

Both the Edinburgh back and Lawson are the grandsons of celebrated commentator Bill McLaren and Thompson revealed his granddad managed to watch the match, which was staged in Bucharest, on TV.

He added: “I think he was watching; I haven’t spoken to him yet, but I will do when I get home. He would have been pleased to see me and Rory playing in the blue shirt together.”

Following Friday’s victory over Russia, Scotland ‘A’ now face Uruguay on Tuesday 16 June (kick off 4pm local time) at the Stadionul National Arcul de Triumf, Bucharest before the final match against France ‘A’ (Sunday 21 June, kick off 8pm) takes place at the same venue.
