Lions hooker Ross Ford believes Edinburgh will learn from the mistakes made at The Rec and deliver a far better performance for the return Heineken Cup meeting with Bath at Murrayfield on Saturday (19 December, kick off 1.35pm).

An off-key start to the match left Edinburgh with a huge amount to do in order to get into the ascendancy, but, despite the uncharacteristic errors, could have still won.

As a result, Ford says that if the Black and Red Army can raise their accuracy levels then they will be in a strong position to defeat the English giants on home soil.

Ford said: “We obviously didn’t perform at all. The first half was really quite poor, but to be that poor and still be in with a shout gives us confidence for the return match this weekend.

“When we perform better we are capable of beating Bath. We really didn’t have a great game and we made a lot of mistakes which kept them just in front.

“But if we can tighten up our own performance and be more accurate we can really test them and score a few more points than we did on Sunday.

“We knew exactly what was coming from them. We knew they were going to play a wide game and that they would try to bully us up front.

“And to a certain extent that is what they managed to do for the first 20 minutes. They got quick ball far too easily and that set the tempo for the first half.

“In the second half we kept the ball a bit better and played some rugby. It was the first half that let us down and that came from the first 20 minutes.

“Everybody in the squad knows we didn’t perform well and that we can all look at our own games. We need to pick points out of the game where we can improve and perform better as a team.

“I think we’ve got a good enough squad to come down to Bath and win when we perform well – we just didn’t do that.

“We need to make sure our accuracy levels are up to scratch every week and that everything is spot on.”
