Edinburgh v Scarlets
CARDIFF 14-36 EDINBURGH (17.05.2009) PDF Print
Sunday, 17 May 2009

Remember the date because today (Sunday, 17 May 2009) Edinburgh made history in the final ever Magners League game to be staged at the Arm’s Park with a phenomenal second half comeback to defeat Cardiff 36-14.

Trailing 14-3 at half-time, to some seasoned observers it seemed as if Edinburgh’s chances of recording their highest ever finish in the Magners League were over.

But the character and belief in the Edinburgh squad can never be underestimated and the Black and Red Army responded magnificently with five second half tries to clinch second spot.

Centre Nick De Luca contributed two tries with the other scores coming from Ben Cairns, Phil Godman and a penalty try.

An unbelievably positive result and set a new all-time Edinburgh record for the amount of successive wins (six).

Despite the glorious climax, Edinburgh got off to a jittery start and conceded a try after only five minutes had lapsed when Nick Robinson dotted down.

A penalty from Chris Paterson, who scored 11 points on the day, reduced the deficit, but Edinburgh were caught cold again when Chris Czekaj crossed the whitewash.

In terms of motivational speeches, head coach Andy Robinson’s half-time chat with the players must have been of the highest order because Edinburgh resumed the action with a renewed sense of vigour.

The opening try for the Black and Red Army was a penalty score when Blues centre Jamie Robinson deliberately impeded a scoring pass and he was subsequently yellow carded.

Edinburgh made the most of the numerical advantage to run in a further three tries in a 22-minute period with first Cairns then De Luca and Godman blowing the Blues away with an irresistible brand of breathtaking rugby.

De Luca compounded Cardiff’s misery and Edinburgh’s genuine sense of elation with try number five to ensure the team in Black and Red chalked up arguably their greatest ever result in their 136-year history.
