EDINBURGH 43-3 DRAGONS (9.05.2009) PDF Print
Friday, 08 May 2009

As the old adage tells us; patience is a virtue and Edinurgh certainly possess that trait because, after slugging their way through a rain soaked first half against Dragons, the Black and Red Army scored four thrilling second half tries.

Replacement John Houston, on for Andrew Turnbull, scored the first try of the match from close range. Fellow replacement Ben Meyer, on his farewell game at Murrayfield, scored the second try after only being on the pitch for less than a minute.

Chris Paterson, who contributed an impressive 28 points, scored a thrilling breakaway try with only three minutes left to set up a memorable finale and then Ben Cairns helped Edinburgh to clinch the bonus point win with another breathtaking  long range effort.

In reflection, the first half was far from pretty, but Edinburgh's discipline and defensive nous ensured the Dragons could not find a way through a wall of Black jerseys.

But after the interval, Houston's simple try reminded Edinburgh how to execute their attacking strategy and the fluency moving forward increased from that point forwards.

Nevertheless with only three minutes left on the clock and reduced to 14 men, following Craig Hamilton's yellow card, Edinburgh stepped up to the plate and delivered what they needed to do in order to claim five points.

The race for second place is still very much alive, although Edinburgh face a stern test next weekend at Cardiff Blues.

But when it comes to breaking records - most Magners League wins in a row, most home wins in a row, most Magners League home wins in a season - dedication is what you need and Edinburgh showed bags of it in the Scottish drizzle.

Paterson scored five penalties in what was largely a frustrating afternoon of rugby in difficult conditions. Jason Tovey put the away side in front inside the first two minutes before Edinburgh responded, although it is far from a polished performance from the home side.

Nevertheless Edinburgh's persistance paid off with an exhilarating finale with tries from Houston, Meyer, Paterson and Cairns.
