Saturday, 25 April 2009

Jim Hamilton scored a thrilling stoppage time try to enable Edinburgh to snatch a dramatic 32-30 win over Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday night.

As a result of the phenomenal triumph, Edinburgh, chalking up their fourth successive win, leapfrogged the Welsh region to climb into second spot in the Magners League standings.

Centre Ben Cairns scored two important tries within 14 first half minutes and Simon Webster also dotted down three minutes before the break.

Edinburgh suffered a lethargic start to the match with Ospreys racing into a 10-point lead through tries from Lions wingers Shane Williams and Tommy Bowe.

But the away side showed resolute spirit and staged a memorable comeback with Cairns seizing control with two eye-catching efforts.

In front 19-17 at half-time, Chris Paterson’s trusty right boot proved to be the difference and he nailed two penalties to put Edinburgh in a commanding position.

Ospreys managed to claw their way in front with only minutes of the contest remaining before MacDonald; almost replicating Alan MacDonald’s matchwinning effort 12 months earlier.

Edinburgh: Chris Paterson; John Houston, Ben Cairns, Nick De Luca, Simon Webster; Phil Godman, Mike Blair (capt); Kyle Traynor, Ross Ford, Geoff Cross, Craig Hamilton, Jim Hamilton, Scott Newlands, Alan MacDonald, Allister Hogg.
Replacements: Andrew Kelly (for Ford), Ryan Grant (for G. Cross), Scott MacLeod (for C. Hamilton), Matt Mustchin (for Newlands), Greig Laidlaw (for M. Blair), Andrew Turnbull (for Houston), Hugo Southwell (for Paterson).
