SCARLETS 13-6 EDINBURGH (8.03.2009) PDF Print
Sunday, 08 March 2009

Scarlets clung on to secure a nervy 13-6 win over Edinburgh at Parc y Scarlets with Daniel Evans contributing a penalty on the 80-minute mark in match where both sides squandered kicks at goal.

Edinburgh missed two (Blair and Chris Paterson) but scored two while the home team missed an extraordinary six attempts at goal (including two conversions).

Two early tries inside the opening 15 minutes from Evans and hooker Ken Owens ultimately did the damage for Edinburgh and, although David Blair notched six points just before the break, the visitors were unable to win the match.

Edinburgh remain in fifth position despite the defeat and the losing bonus point (Edinburgh's fifth of the season - interestingly higher than any other team) ensures the Black and Red Army are ahead of Ulster and Glasgow in the standings.

To summarise, it was an ineffectual performance in difficult conditions that left an overwhelming sense of disappointment for everyone associated with the club.

Nevertheless the schedule has been particularly tough on Edinburgh with the match at Parc y Scarlets the third tough away match in a row following the trips to Leinster and Munster.

Edinburgh need to generate some much-coveted momentum and with back-to-back home matches against Connacht and Cardiff on the horizon the future does not seem so downbeat.

Marc Teague made his Edinburgh debut after coming on as a second half replacement for Mark Robertson and Steve Lawrie replaced Andrew Kelly in the front row with six minutes of the contest remaining.

Edinburgh: Hugo Southwell (Paterson); Simon Webster, Ben Cairns, Nick De Luca, Mark Robertson (Teague), David Blair, Greig Laidlaw; Kyle Traynor, Andrew Kelly (Lawrie), Ryan Grant, Scott MacLeod (Hamilton_, Ben Gissing (BR Hamilton), Simon Cross (Newlands), Alan MacDonald, Allister Hogg (captain)

Substitutes: Steve Lawrie, Bruce McNeil, Craig Hamilton, Scott Newlands, Ben Meyer, Marc Teague, Chris Paterson.
