Phil Godman admits Edinburgh ground out a win over Ulster on Friday evening, but says he is pleased with how he has fared with his goalkicking over recent games.

Despite enjoying a sparkling two-try start, Edinburgh ran out of steam against Ulster, but still managed to secure a 21-15 victory at Murrayfield.

As a result, Godman acknowledges the team can perform better, but highlighted the bright start and a sign of things to come from the men in Black and Red.

Godman said: “I thought in the first half, especially the first 20 minutes we played some really good stuff and had good shape.

“But towards the end of the first half and certainly in the second half we went away from that and the game became turgid.

“At the set piece, line-out and scrum, we struggled and overall we struggled to get a grip on the game in the second half.

“It probably wasn’t the best one for the supporters to watch. But the first 20 minutes was very pleasing and we should take quite a lot out of that.

“Over the next couple of weeks, we need to put more of that in the game.”

Going into the match, Godman topped the tournament’s kicking accuracy table with a success rate of over 86%.

The Scotland playmaker continued that impeccable form with three penalties and a conversion while only missing one tricky pot at goal.

He says he has enjoyed being handed the responsibility of taking control of the team’s kicking duties and believes he is getting better at it.

He said: “It is pleasing and I’m happy with the way I’m striking the ball, especially tonight (Friday) because there was quite a bit of wind.

“Probably the best one I struck just drifted past the right-hand post. I obviously kicked last year, but with Mossy (Chris Paterson) coming back I haven’t because he is the best kicker in the world.

“It is a job I feel I can do and I got a bit of confidence from it last year. I feel it could become a real strength in my game. If I’m asked to do a job then I would like to do it to the best of my abilities.”
