In front of a record home crowd for a Magners League match of 12, 534, Mike Blair (pictured), Simon Webster, Hugo Southwell and Ben Cairns all scored memorable tries for Edinburgh to seal a comprehensive David Lloyd 1872 Cup first leg win over Glasgow. In a fairly one-sided game, Edinburgh seized control from the outset and despite a few first half penalty scares and a Kelly Brown try attempt being chalked off, it was all one-way traffic in Black and Red. Phil Godman also had a profitable night scoring five penalties and two conversions in a spellbinding display. Edinburgh were reduced to 14-men when Scott Newlands was yellow-carded, but as soon as the flanker returned to the pitch, Edinburgh cranked up the pressure. In the first half, Edinburgh started purposefully against Glasgow with captain Mike Blair leading by example; racing 45 yards to dot down underneath the posts. Godman’s long range penalty had put the home side ahead and he added another on the 28-minute mark to restore Edinburgh's lead before nailing a conversion. But the visitors had drawn level when Dan Parks, who has missed two other shots at goal, equalised with a penalty six minutes later and he has scored a penalty on 34 minutes to reduce the deficit. Kelly Brown also had a try chalked off right at the start of the second half when the Video referee claimed he was out of play and Edinburgh breathed a sigh of relief. In the second half, Godman orchestrated a spellbinding try when his reverse flick found Simon Webster racing into space and the team's record Magners League try scorer finished in style. Selling more dummies than a persuasive mannequin salesman, Godman was at the zenith of his playing powers and the record crowd were captivated by the sorcery conjured up by EH12's Magician. Further flowing moves up the pitch enabled Southwell - named man of the match by Gregor Townsend - to punch a sizeable hole in Glasgow's brittle defence and he strolled through to score. The final try to secure the much-needed bonus point arrived courtesy of last season's last gasp hero, Ben Cairns. The former Royal High student latched onto Southwell's pass and hurtled through the wall of light Blue to heighten Edinburgh's joy with only seconds of the match remaining.
