ImageA late try from Wasps flanker Tom Rees wrecked Edinburgh's chances of recording another famous scalp in the Heineken Cup.

In front of a record Heineken Cup crowd of 7, 711, Edinburgh took a dramatic lead through a try from winger Mark Robertson (pictured).

The Scotland A internationalist touched down Phil Godman's adventurous cross-field kick to set up a grandstand finish in EH 12.

But despite a famous second half comeback, Edinburgh were on the receiving end of a defeat in Europe's premier competition.

Edinburgh had staged a heroic comeback against London Wasps at Murrayfield with the nerveless kicking of Chris Paterson putting the hosts within three points of the English champions.

Paterson scored three penalties, two inside two second half minutes, against a slick Wasps side who were, at one point, nine points ahead through four penalties from Danny Cipriani.

The opening 30 minutes of play was a war of attrition at the breakdown. Battle-hardened flanker Serge Betsen dominated that area and denied Edinburgh any quick ball and Wasps impenetrable defensive pattern meant that when Edinburgh did start to generate any momentum they were running into traffic or into a wall of Yellow jerseys.

Robertson's score put Edinburgh 16-15 - the first time the hosts had led during the game - but unfortunately Ross Rennie was yellow-carded by referee Christophe Berdos and Rees crossed the whitewash to win the tie.

Wasps' superior game management and on-field know-how enabled them to have the upper hand, but Edinburgh's young side, with an average age of just 25, will have learned a lot from the events that unfolded and will have a chance to put that into practice at Adams Park in the return leg.

Edinburgh: Paterson; Robertson, Cairns, De Luca, Webster; Godman, M Blair; Jacobsen, Ford, G Cross, C Hamilton, J. Hamilton, MacDonald, Rennie, Hogg.
Replacements: Kelly for Ford (19), Kerr for G. Cross (75), Mustchin for C. Hamilton (59).
Replacements Not Used: Newlands, Laidlaw, D Blair, Southwell.
