CARDIFF BLUES 10-11 EDINBURGH (04.01.2008) PDF Print

ImagePhil Godman's dropped goal helped Edinburgh win their fourth successive Magners League win with a 11-10 victory in a thrilling finale against Cardiff at Arms Park.

Ben Blair's penalty had put Cardiff two points ahead in the closing stages of a mud-soaked battle at the Arms Park with Edinburgh's other points coming from a Godman penalty and a Andrew Turnbull try. But Edinburgh kept their calm and slowly built up momentum through a succession of phases before Godman nailed his kick.

In the first half, Nick De Luca was yellow carded by referee Clancy and then to make matters worse Matt Mustchin was sin binned and eventually 13-man Edinburgh conceded when Blues captain Xavier Rush scored with Blair adding the extras.

On a heavily waterlogged pitch, Edinburgh started purposefully and, after a couple of phases of play, Godman's kick through bounced out of touch. But Cardiff looked comfortable and survived the early scare before clearing their lines.
In the terrible conditions, Cardiff were guilty of making two handling errors inside the opening five minutes, but Irish referee Clancy penalised Edinburgh for not scrummaging correctly.

The impressive Ben Cairns kicked through and almost turned over possession inside Cardiff's 22 and the move triggered a flowing move that was finished off by Turnbull after six minutes.
